Asphalt or Concrete? Is it Time to Refinish Your Driveway

When it is time to refinish your driveway, you might be wondering if you should go with asphalt or concrete. If your driveway is pre-existing, you might be tempted to go with what is already there, yet there are some definite advantages and disadvantages to both asphalt and concrete. Here’s what you need to know to make your decision.

Composition

Asphalt and concrete both consist of rocks and sand. The difference lies in the binder. With asphalt, the binder is tar and oil. With concrete, the binder is cement. These two different binders are what makes the two types of driveways so very different in appearance and durability.

Aesthetics

There can be a definite curb appeal to having your driveway be asphalt like the road before it. It can give your home a clean, professional look, yet there is a lot more that can be done with concrete. Concrete can be different colors, different patterns, and even concrete pavers can be used to create an aesthetic that you will be happy with for years to come.

Maintenance

There are some advantages and disadvantages for different driveways when it comes to maintenance. Asphalt driveways must be sealed about six months to a year after they are poured. It then has to be sealed every three to five years after that to make sure that it stays in good condition. Concrete doesn’t have to be sealed to last upwards of 50 years, but sealing it can help preserve the finish and prevent staining. Staining is more likely with concrete than asphalt.

Cost

The cost of asphalt is much less than the cost of concrete, at least when you first get your driveway installed. Yet with the added maintenance costs, the two are comparable in price when you consider the lifetime of the driveway. If you are looking to give your home a facelift without spending a lot of cash initially, an asphalt driveway can accomplish that easily.
